How to Store Fake Plants

There’s no shame in opting for fake plants over living ones. The right fake plants look just as beautiful as the real thing—sometimes even more so—and they never, ever die. You can go on vacation for a week and come home to a beautiful green, perfectly flowering plant rather than the withered brown skeleton of a once vibrant fern.

And if you need to store you fake plants, you can take comfort in knowing that they’ll fare very well in self storage. Best of all, fake plants are actually allowed in storage units. Living plants—like all living things—are not.

It’s not hard to store a fake plant, mostly because of the whole never dying thing, but here are a few tips to get you started.

Cleaning

Before you store your fake plants, clean them. You really don’t have to worry about chemicals damaging fake plants, so this makes preparing them for storage quite easy. You should, however, be gentle when cleaning fake plants.

First, remove dust with either a dust cloth or a vacuum attachment. For dust and debris in hard to reach spots (like inside fake flowers) use canned air to dislodge and then wipe clean.

Next, wipe leaves down with a microfiber cloth dipped in some warm water. You may also wipe leaves with a paper towel and all-purpose cleaner if you’d like, but avoid any products containing bleach.

Once you’re satisfied with the state of your fake plants, allow them to air dry.

Packing

Most fake plants come in ceramic or clay pots that can be broken if not handled properly. Depending on the size of your fake plants, you may consider storing them in a moving box. If you don’t have the right size, ask you storage facility, as they may sell moving supplies.

Fill the box with newspaper or tissue paper so that the fake plants are cushioned and are not able to move around. Label the box so that you know which side to carry it on.

Unlike real plants, fake plants don’t need air, so fill the box with as much cushioning as you’d like.

Choosing a Storage Unit

Storage units come in a variety of sizes. You do not need climate control to store fake plants, but if you are storing a number of other items, such as artwork, antique furniture, musical instruments and leather, you should consider it, especially if you live in an area that’s prone to humidity.

For storing fake plants, you might want to rent a drive-up storage unit, which will allow you to drive into the storage facility and park right beside the storage unit. These type of storage units make loading and unloading easy.

The number one thing that a fake plant needs in storage is darkness, and a storage unit can provide plenty of that.

Fortunately, the standard self storage lease is month-to-month, so when you’re ready to take your fake plants out of storage—whether it’s for the holidays or just for some new decorations—you won’t be obligated to hang onto your storage unit if you no longer need it.
