Move over Twilight, Storage Facilities take over American Pop Culture

Sara Heins | November 19, 2012 @ 9:59 AM

You’ve got to admit that storage facilities have been all over the screens lately. One may even go as far as to say it’s rivaling the weird vampire craze that’s swept the nation over the past few years. How there are enough storage unit owners that default (and then actually have valuable stuff tucked away) that they can make four reality series of, I’m not sure. Although I also have no idea how they can keep attracting teenagers and middle-aged housewives* with this vampire crap either. People like vampires because they’re scary, violent and sexy; I think people may appreciate storage facilities for the same reason.  However, once you get to know a vampire/storage facility, you realize they’re not so bad after all! Many storage facilities come with gated entry access, 24 hour security cameras and managers who actually live onsite. Many vampires…don’t actually exist. So you see, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Don’t believe me that the storage industry is getting it’s fair share of cultural hype? Take a look at the last decade (plus one future year) of storage hysteria:

Exhibit A:

2002 - Self Storage

(The one with Dwight Schrute) - With a tagline like, "Time to clean out the garage," you know it's going to be a thrill ride of horror from the moment it begins.

2010 - Auction Hunters

Storage auctions make their way onto the tv screens nationwide.

2010 - Storage Wars

Like Auction Hunters, but with an annoying catch-phrase guy.

2011 - Storage Hunters

Now they have three storage auction shows.

2011 - Storage Wars Texas

A spinoff of a storage auction show? Now we’re just getting carried away.

2012 - Storage 24

An Irish flick that just came out on DVD. Never heard of it? It’s a feature-length film filled with terror and blood.

2013 -  Self Storage

(The highly anticipated Eric Roberts version) - Premise: A bunch of friends looking to become under the influence of alcohol party at a self storage facility and meet a crazy serial killer. All I have to say is that if they made a show/movie/young adult book series about a vampire storage auctioneer who falls in love with a strong female lead, it’d make millions. *I am neither of these and still find them addicting. What’s wrong with me?
