Crime Prevention Tip: Lock Your Unit!

CJ Moore | July 7, 2010 @ 11:04 AM

For your latest lesson in self storage crime prevention, we turn to Montgomery, Ala. The Montgomery Advertiser reported on Tuesday that $3,300 worth of furniture was stolen from an unlocked storage unit. This all went down sometime between March 1 and July 3. If they have a surveillance camera, I would hate to be the guy who has to watch the tape for four months (I'll bring the popcorn). The stolen items: four couches, valued at $1,700, four lamps, valued at $400 (really, these lamps that he has in storage cost $400?), two recliners, valued at $200, and one brass vase, valued at $1,000 (that must be one nice vase). So how can you keep this from happening to you? Unless you’re looking for a nice insurance collection, which would be sort of… ahem… really illegal, it’s probably a good idea to keep your storage unit locked. This might also be a lesson to check on your things more regularly; however, storage facilities with strong security amenities can usually be trusted.
