Trick or Charity: Self Storage Facilities Giving Back on Halloween

Halloween is fast approaching, and while some may be looking for their black Voldemort cloaks or donning a sharp Adidas track suit in the name of Sue Sylvester, others are flocking to storage facilities as a way to give back to the community on the eve of the 2010 holiday season. We’ve highlighted how renters in the storage community have been using their units as makeshift offices, temporary houses, or a place to keep their pets, but it turns out, your storage unit can also aid your philanthropic efforts. Extra Space Storage’s blogger John Stevens wrote an insightful article about an organization that uses a storage unit to house and distribute donated clothes. “Hundreds of people have used the facility since it opened two months ago. Donations are abundant with 800 to 1,000 lbs. of clothes donated last week. Sometimes odd donations come in, like Civil War clothing,” Stevens reports. And that’s not all. Apparently, using a storage unit in in a charitable way has swept the nation. From book drives to the donation and distribution of other goods for the less fortunate, perhaps renting out a storage unit cannot only benefit the facility or yourself, but the community at large.
