Guns, Knives and Self Storage Auctions – The Real America

storage auctionDo you like to gamble? Do you love the Price is Right and the anticipation of finding out what’s behind that door? I thought of Bob Barker when I read this story. When Drew Carey took over the show, Barker should have started a new show about abandoned self storage unit auctions. Joe Jackson, you just paid $165 for this abandoned unit. Let’s see what’s behind that door! The storage unit auction is becoming more prevalent because of the *economy. Just as people are defaulting on their mortgages, they’re defaulting on their storage units. *Blaming the economy is becoming more American than apple pie. The garage-sale hunters have new treasures to go after, and they’re at these abandoned units, where you never know what you’re going to find. The catch is that you can get a sneak peak at the unit before you bid, but you can’t touch anything or open any boxes. Momma always said storage units are kind of like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. At the abandoned units in Tennessee, David Dawson, who spends $25,000 to $35,000 a year at these auctions, has “gotten lucky” with a leftover three-carat diamond ring. He also found nine pistols and 48 knives in one box. Another unit had a Harley-Davidson that was left behind. Now it seems to me that the storage unit’s defaulter could have sold his bike and been able to make his payments. Of course, who is buying a motorcycle in this economy? I guess that’s the benefit of attending these auctions, the chance at finding a treasure… or increasing your artillery. You’ve got to protect yourself from the threat of this economy somehow.
